In both Big and Little Darby Creeks, the brilliantly-colored darters in this panting thrive, depending on pristine highly oxygenated freshwater for their survival. Orange-throated darters and rainbow darters are rare because of their specific habitat requirements and the disappearance of viable aquatic systems due to unsustainable land use in areas of the Midwest. This image was commissioned for the cover of The Darby Book: A Guide for Residents of The Darby Creek Watershed to raise awareness and funds for this very special place in central Ohio.
